HGI is an independent consulting company with proven world-class expertise in contaminant transport in clay-rich and heterogeneous geologic media and evaluating the potential impact of mining on the geosphere and hydrosphere. HGI also has recognized expertise in the general area of hydrogeology and geochemistry of groundwater and environmental chemistry of contaminants. HGI has been involved in studies internationally and employs state of the science techniques, some of which were developed to meet specific objectives of clients. Areas of expertise include:
- Defining the hydrogeology and geochemistry of clay-rich and heterogeneous geologic media (e.g., lacustrine sediments, and glacial tills) to understand fate and transport of water and solutes. For more information about aquitard characterization, click here.
- Defining the impact of mine wastes on the geosphere and hydrosphere including quantifying the long-term (10,000 years) fate and transport of contaminants in mine tailings (e.g., arsenic, molybdenum, selenium, and nickel) and mine waste rock (e.g., arsenic, selenium and nickel). - Exploring the critical role of molecular oxygen (O2) in the activity and respiration of subsurface microorganisms, the oxidation of soil and dissolved organic matter, and in numerous biogeochemical reactions that can occur in unsaturated zones. As part of this research, HGI has developed and applied new techniques to characterizing rates of reactions of both O2 and CO2 in a range of vadose zone conditions.
- Supporting regulatory compliance in the areas of water, waste, and toxics for facilities located throughout the United States.
